Understanding this care pathway

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS) are terms families may encounter when seeking behavioral support. ROW’s ABA/IBHS pathway should be considered through an individualized discussion of goals, assessment needs, service eligibility, and the settings where support may be appropriate.

Goals that reflect the whole child

Care should account for strengths, communication style, developmental level, sensory needs, individual goals, and the family’s priorities. A neurodiversity-affirming approach values meaningful participation and practical skills while respecting the child’s identity.

Caregiver and school collaboration

Caregiver collaboration and coordination with school/community supports help connect goals with daily routines. The team can discuss which service settings and supports are available for the child’s needs and location.

Brave Bites, Little Learners, and social-skills/social-preparedness programming are focused pathways within ROW’s pediatric care. Ask the team about each program’s purpose, eligibility, and current availability.

How ABA/IBHS connects with psychiatric care

Behavioral services and psychiatric levels of care are distinct. A child who needs treatment for a psychiatric condition may also benefit from neurodevelopmental understanding and coordination across providers. Placement in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is driven by psychiatric needs. ROW’s continuum includes neurodiversity-affirming psychiatric PHP/IOP with interdisciplinary autism and behavioral expertise; ABA/IBHS remains a distinct service pathway.
